The invention of ice cream is surrounded by myth: some believe
that Nero, Emperor of Rome used slaves to collect ice and mixed
it with fruit, or that Marco Polo brought the recipe back from
China, others that the royal chef of Charles the First of England
created it. However, we do know that Dolly Madison, wife of U.S.
President James Madison, served ice cream at her husband's Inaugural
ball in 1813.
· The first hand-cranked freezer was invented
in New Jersey in 1846, and patented in 1848. And ice cream starting
selling in Yokohama, Japan, in 1869.
· The first Canadian to start selling ice
cream was confectioner Thomas Webb of Toronto, in 1850; and William
Neilson produced his first commercial batch of ice cream in 1893,
continuing at the same Toronto location for close to 100 years.
